My Secret to Happiness

6 Simple Practices to Energise the Mood

People often ask me, “How are you always so full of energy and positive vibes? What’s your secret to maintaining a great mood?” I used to think genetics played a role in having a natural predisposition toward positivity. However, over time, I have realized that happiness is about actively managing your inner energy. Its something you need to generate, protect and renew; this energy must be balanced – mentally, physically and emotionally.

There are certain practices I’ve followed throughout my life that have helped me effectively manage this positive energy. Whenever I neglect these, my mood noticeably declines.

Understanding Happiness

For me, being happy means being purposeful and well charged throughout the day.  It’s not about being upbeat all the time—it’s about having the right energy to take on what life brings. And that comes from how you manage your rest, focus, relationships, and mindset.

Here are the six ways I keep my energy flowing and my mood thriving:

 1. Ample sleep – Recharge Fully

The importance of sleep cannot be overstated. It’s almost impossible to stay positive or clear-headed when your body and brain are depleted. I aim for seven to eight hours of sleep these days. Sleep helps your brain process information and gain perspective. It’s amazing how much thinking happens passively—your brain aligns things for you, often while you sleep. That’s why I stick to a sleep schedule: early to bed, early to rise. When that’s not possible due to work or personal commitments, I take power naps during the day.

Though it may feel awkward to rest your head on your desk or lie down for a quick nap, I’ve found it incredibly effective. A short rest quickly restores energy and clarity. I especially find naps useful when I expect a late-night event with colleagues or friends.

2. Planning the day – Using Energy Wisely

I’m naturally organized—just check my drawers, shoe cabinet, or the to-do list on my phone. I make five-year goals, New Year’s resolutions, and, most importantly, I plan each day before it begins.

Planning reduces uncertainty and improves focus, helping avoid distractions and decision fatigue. Every morning, I assess how I feel and plan accordingly. Listening to your mind and body is key to shaping a good day and use your energy wisely.

My running task list helps manage stress by creating a sense of control. I prioritize tasks daily and only plan for what can be achieved. The list also serves as a reminder of how much I’ve achieved over time.

3. Getting into action – Momentum Conserves Charge

I stay active most of the day and enjoy the small wins—they energise you just like getting “likes” on social media. Whether it’s making my bed, doing push-ups, or ironing clothes, these simple acts uplift my mood and energy.

Throughout the day, I keep completing tasks. I mix enjoyable activities with the ones I dread, tackling the ones that need more energy first. That way, I look forward to the fun parts of the day without the anxiety of unfinished business.

4. Fuel up on love – Recharging Emotions

Love is most renewable energy source I know; it comes free from those who love and care about you. It’s important to know who these people are and prioritize time with them.

Loving someone brings great feeling but it all starts with loving yourself. I am my favourite person. ☺️ so I dedicate time daily to things I enjoy – be it a cup of coffee, gardening or music.

I’ve also reflected deeply on who my loved ones are. These relationships deserve your best time, whether you’re sharing a meal, watching a show, playing sports, or even doing chores. Being with people you love transforms the experience. Avoid overextending yourself to those who drain your energy.

5. Take responsibility – Expand Energy

I believe happiness is rooted in gratitude. It promotes a mindset of growth and giving. When you acknowledge your blessings and express gratitude – it sparks resourcefulness and generosity.

Every morning, I thank God for what I have and begin the day with a mindset of abundance.

Taking responsibility is a beautiful act of kindness that brings immense energy back to you. Being there for others—whether it’s a school run, helping someone, or doing your job well—is deeply fulfilling. If I can help, I will. Even if there’s no direct benefit, it energizes me.

6. Be the hero of your story – Protect Your Energy

Lastly, I stay grounded in the real world and among real people. I limit social media use and mostly use it for news and updates. Watching other people’s lives too much drains energy through anxiety, envy, and self-doubt.

Smartphones are hard to resist but I have made it a habit to use it only when I need to. Each morning, reflect on what I have, what I want to achieve, and who I want to spend time with.

It’s my story, and I focus on writing it my way.
